Evaluation Criteria
When I was interviewing, I knew what a good case felt like however I wasn’t sure what were all the dimensions that I was ranked on. I knew my logical structuring, analytical skills and final recommendation were key areas that I was ranked on but it was only when I started interviewing candidates that I realized all the things that matter. In true management consulting fashion, let us list them in a structured manner.
Problem-Solving
a) Logical structuring (not just the initial structure)
b) Hypothesis-driven approach (McKinsey over indexes on this)
c) Insight generation (the so-what)
d) Charting path forward
Analytical Skills
a) Analytical rigor (quantitative elements)
Business Acumen
a) Industry specificity (approach customization for an industry)
b) Commercial awareness (business mechanics)
c) Creativity
Communication, Social Skills and Presence
a) Clarity of communication
b) Synthesis and top-down communication (conciseness)
c) Confidence and coachability
d) Energy
To summarize, these are the key dimensions that candidates are assessed on. Even if they are not formally ranked on each of these in the scoring matrix, interviewers do consider these dimensions when ranking candidates.
